NOTE #1: Obit March 5 reads:
FUNERAL OF MRS. HUXTABLE YESTERDAY
Mrs. Lydia Foust Hustable, widow of the late W.H. Huxtable, died at the home of her daughter, Mtrs. Christian Holst, on last Monday afternoon, as announced in the Eagle on Tuesday morning.
Mrs. Huxtable was the daughter of Michael and Maria Foust and was born in Center county, Pennsylvania, June 20,1829. She came with her parents to Clinton county, Iowa, in 1842, coming part of the way by wagon. In 1857, she was united in marriage with Mr. Huxtable and for a time they resided in the Platteville, Wis., but shortly afterward they moved to Iowa county, Wisconsin, where they engaged in the hotel business, and it was while there that General Grant was a familiar figure at their hotel and was well known by them.
In 1870, they moved to Taylor township, this county, where they purchased 210 acres of land and lived there until 1882, and then spent six months in California, hoping to benefit their health, but returned to Vinton in the spring of 1883 and remained here.
Mrs. Huxtable was the oldest of nine children in the Foust family, being survived by three brothers, Benjamin and Michael in Springville, IA. and Abraham of St. Francis, Kansas, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Sams of Wyoming, Iowa.
One daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Huxtable, on Jan. 26, 1849, but she died at the age of 22. About 1885 they adopted Janey, now, Mrs. Christian Holst, the daughter of a sister of Mrs. Huxtable. Mrs. Hustable made her home alone after the marriage of her daughter about twelve years ago, until just before the holidays, when she went to the home of her daughter.
The funeral was held yesterday morning from the homestead on Concord street. The services were conducted by Rev. T. H. Templeof the M.E. Church, in which Mrs. Huxtable had been a devout member for years. The burial was in the family lot at Evergreen.
Mrs. Huxtable had a host of friends and was happiest when with the family of her daughter, all whom were devoted to her.
